One St. Kitts and Nevis-based company believes that it has found a way to lure more tourists to the twin island federation: buy a new locomotive.

The St. Kitts Scenic Railway, which operates an 18-mile narrow-gauge railway around St. Kitts, has purchased a $650,000 locomotive from a United States manufacturer, company officials said. The locomotive is scheduled to arrive this month and to be operable in time for the winter cruise tourism season, according to a company press release.

“We have begun construction of a new locomotive specifically designed for curves and grades on a narrow-gauge railway which was used under sugar,” Thomas Williams, the railway company’s vice-president, said in the release.

He added that the locomotive is about 70 percent complete and the unit’s shorter wheelbase will allow it to navigate the curved track more easily.
