Just a few days after many supermarkets in the territory started charging 15 cents for plastic grocery bags, shoppers seem to be getting used to the idea.

“Every time I come to shop, I bring a bag,” said Cane Garden Bay resident Gwenette Hodge. Although prior to this week she used free plastic shopping bags, she hasn’t found the switch to be inconvenient.

Ms. Hodge isn’t convinced that charging for the bags will really solve the problem, however. “The plastic is still in the environment,” she said.

Even if they knew about the switch, some customers aren’t so agreeable about it.

“It’s ridiculous; they’re going back in time,” said Kelvin Thomas, describing childhood trips to the market with his grandmother when he and his cousins would help her carry the groceries.
