Decades ago, Virgin Islands men who hoped to date a young woman had to write a letter seeking permission, Janice Stoutt’s character said during her play “BVI in Times Past.”

“Nowadays, them ain’t asking for no permission from the parents,” she said.

The Saturday performance at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium was part of activities for the recently concluded Festival of Arts.

Ms. Stoutt, a lawyer, wrote the play, which tells the story of a young Virgin Islander named Deliah, a United States resident who returns to the VI looking for information about the territory’s history.

During the show, the auditorium was filled to capacity and folding chairs were placed in the middle of the isles to accommodate spectators. A few attendees hung around outside, while others left. The play will be performed again at a later date, according to organisers.
