As Nov. 7 Polling Day approaches in the Virgin Islands, students at the Elmore Stoutt High School held an election of their own.

On Thursday they elected the ESHS Executive Student Council for this school year.

The election was the first since the school’s name was changed from the BVI High School in April 2007, according to Government Information Services.

Education and Culture Minister Andrew Fahie welcomed the step, which he said “shows we encourage a democratic society whereby we can sensitise our students on the importance of voting and allow them to understand the issues, process, and its significance.”

Donna Clyne-Thomas, the assistant principal with responsibility for pastoral affairs, said the election will help provide students with an education that incorporates real-life scenarios.

“It was a learning experience that taught students the significance of having a voice in the decision-making process,” Ms. Clyne-Thomas said.
