On Sunday, the Sugar Boys needed only one goal to win the Wendoll Williams Cup over the Islanders for the third time at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds.

The goal — the only one of the game — came in the 90th minute from a cross shot by Keron Daniel from the Islanders’ left side. The shot on goal appeared to be an easy save, but Islanders goalkeeper Monty Butler fumbled the ball and it bounced behind him into the net.

“To be honest it was a cross, but the keeper made a mistake and overall we deserved a bit of luck,” said Mr. Daniel.

However, Derol Redhead was in a celebratory mood and was happy to take the win.

“It was an enjoyable game, we played tough and kept going until the final whistle,” he said. “The goal was, maybe, the break we deserved.”

Terry Nanton, of the Sugar Boys, was named the tournament’s MVP — an honour that Mr. Redhead thought was well deserved

“We expect a lot from him, he pulls strings for us from midfield and once he plays his role we are all on top of our game,” Mr. Redhead said.

Javon Carty offered congratulations to the Sugar Boys, but felt his team should have been ahead by half time.

“We battled hard, missed a few good chances through poor finishing and then conceded a very unfortunate goal right at the death,” Mr. Carty said. “The Sugar Boys played a good game and we will go back to the drawing board to plan for the next tournament.”

Franis Primo and Allesandro Pallandino were both awarded with Golden Boot honours.

In September, the BVI Football Association hopes the next tournament will take place on the new pitch in East End, which is currently under construction.

In the women’s division, Lilly Pierce scored three goals to help the Ballstars to a 5-0 win over Virgin Gorda United to take the Wendoll Williams Women’s Cup.

At the start of the second half, the Ballstars led 1-0 with a goal from Emily Lockhart.

Ms. Lockhart played a deeper midfield role in the second half and earned the MVP honour for creating opportunities for her team, including Ms. Pierce’s goals, who was named the tournament’s Golden Boot.

“It feels great to win, I really enjoyed the curling effort from the edge of the box, but the whole team played well and put together some good moves,” Ms. Pierce said.

She added that VG United played a good game, despite the young team’s lack of experience.

Ballstars captain, Sharlene Pond, also thought VG played well and believes the team will be a contender in the future.

“We started short of players, but as a team we were able to hold ourselves together and come out as champions,” Ms. Pond said. “I am looking forward to seeing those VG girls again. If they stick together and keep improving, it can only be good for the women’s game as a whole.”

Yasmin Ruffel-Smith scored the fifth and final goal for the Ballstars.
