“At just three months old, Misty’s an underage worker,” joked co-master of ceremonies Phil Aspinall Saturday afternoon as Jose Husein and his puppy Misty joined the other working dog contestants during the BVI Humane Society’s 37th dog show.

Working dogs don’t have to be professionals, so to speak, but are a group of mostly large breeds often used for jobs like police work or rescue assistance, according to the American Kennel Club.

Mr. Husein and his Rottweiler puppy didn’t take home the prize for best working dog — that went to Simon Filmer’s Fen — but they did snag the best puppy prize.

“She’s pretty smart, a good dog,” Mr. Husein said while Misty enjoyed a small patch of shade at Mulligan’s.

Just over 30 dogs participated in this year’s show, a drop from recent years, said Nancy Woodfield-Pascoe, a Humane Society board member. She said from what she’s heard, some dog owners don’t want to participate in the show because they feel their dogs aren’t obedient enough.

But that need not be an issue. Indeed, the “fun” category — Best Dressed — was the only category that saw as many entries as the Basic Obedience category. Shelter volunteers even brought a supply of dog outfits that owners could borrow just for the competition.
