Usually Vivian Hodge sleeps most of the day and spends much of the night singing and praying in her bed at the Adina Donovan Home for the Elderly.

But on Monday, Aug. 15, she surprised the home’s staff by staying awake all day. Perhaps that’s not surprising, though: It was her 100th birthday.

Family, friends and government officials visited the facility to celebrate, according to ADH Manager Victoria Wheatley.

Ms. Hodge actively participated, Ms. Wheatley said: Even though her vision is failing and she has difficulty speaking, she was able to recognise her relatives by their voices.

“She smiled when they whispered in her ears,” Ms. Wheatley said. “You could see she was enjoying her special day.”
