High Court Justice Indra Hariprashad-Charles sentenced Kandy James to seven years in prison and Akeem Richardson to four years on Monday, saying their violent attempt in February 2010 to induce a miscarriage in a 17-year-old carrying Mr. Richardson’s baby was reminiscent of an “evil, demonic and satanic plot.”

The baby was ultimately “born healthy,” said Mr. Richardson’s attorney, Stephen Daniels.

On Feb. 27, 2010, after failing to convince the girl to terminate her pregnancy voluntarily, Mr. Richardson invited her to join him at the Hotel Castle Maria, telling her he had won a two-night stay in a raffle, Crown Counsel Sarah Benjamin said in court on Friday.

That night, “the virtual complainant stated she fell asleep and was awoken to find that she was having difficulty breathing,” Ms. Benjamin said. “Something black was covering her face and someone was on top of her.”

Mr. Richardson was in the room, the prosecutor said, but “offered no assistance” to the girl. Ms. James, wearing a mask, hit the girl’s head against the floor, kneeled on her face and held her down, the prosecutor said. Mr. Richardson assisted her in forcing the girl’s legs apart and forcing pills into her mouth and vagina, Ms. Benjamin said.
