John Duncan, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s director of engagement and communications, will take over as the governor of the Virgin Islands in July 2014, the FCO announced yesterday.

“I am delighted to be appointed and look forward in due course to taking on the role of governor, working together with colleagues and friends in the overseas territories to build on the achievements so far and tackle the challenges ahead,” Mr. Duncan said in the announcement.

Since joining the FCO in 1980, Mr. Duncan has served in various posts, including in the Overseas Development Administration, as the deputy head of the Security Policy Department, deputy head of the South Atlantic Dependant Territories and Antarctic Department, and as director of United Kingdom Trade and Investment.

He is married to Anne Marie Duncan and has one daughter and one son, according to his FCO biography.

The territory’s current governor, Boyd McCleary, arrived in August 2010. His three-year contract was extended by a year at his request.
