Reading is Fun Week kicked off on Monday at Elmore Stoutt High School with a ceremony honouring long-time teacher Jennie Wheatley.

Ms. Wheatley was recognised for various contributions to the education system, including starting the ESHS library years ago.

During the ceremony, Governor Boyd McCleary and Education and Culture Minister Andrew Fahie were among the speakers who praised the educator.

Mr. McCleary described her as someone who loves to read and has written books of her own. Mr. Fahie told the students that Ms. Wheatley taught him English when he was a student at the then-BVI High School.

“She was a very good storyteller, but she also taught us a lot about life,” Mr. Fahie said. “Ms. Wheatley can give you a very good joke.”
