Keith Godwin pleaded guilty in High Court Oct. 5 to attempting to choke and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, after prosecutors said he subjected his girlfriend to nearly four hours of domestic violence on June 20.

Mr. Godwin allegedly dragged the victim through their North Sound, Virgin Gorda, home by her hair, squeezing her neck, threatening to kill her, and demanding that she confess to cheating on him, Crown Counsel Jude Hanley said in a sentencing hearing Monday. At one point, when he was attempting to choke her, she lost consciousness, and awoke to Mr. Godwin sprinkling water on her face and slapping her, the prosecutor said.

During the sentencing hearing, defence lawyer Ruthilia Maximea read a letter from Mr. Godwin apologising for the incident.

Justice Indra Hariprashad-Charles said she will pronounce her sentence on Tuesday.

“Certainly, it will be custodial,” Ms. Hariprashad-Charles said.
