It is the first time any Virgin Islands athlete has taken the podium at the games.

The competition got under way on July 21 with VI tennis player Adrian Baijnauth losing in two sets, 2-6, 0-6, to Arki Nobbs, of Norfolk Island, in the men’s singles division.

Aside from competition, the VI delegation was invited to the resort Atlantis for a reception for the Queen’s Baton visit.

On the second day of competition, the track and field events got under way. The results are as followed:

Diamante Gumbs: sixth in the discus (50.67 metres, a personal best.)

Arianna Hayde: sixth in the long jump (5.57 metres)

Joshua Hill: fifth in the 400-metre heat (49.75 seconds)

Mikkel Bassue: Seventh in the 100 metres (10.90 seconds in semi-finals and 10.86 seconds in the finals — both personal bests.)

The VI secured its second medal when Beyonce Defreitas took second in the 200 metres with a time of 23.88 seconds. Riley Day, of Australia, took first with a time of 23.42” and the bronze went to Ella Connolly, of Australia, in 24.09 seconds.

Prior to competition, the opening ceremony started on July 18 with Mr. Gumbs leading the delegation as the flag bearer for the territory. All told, 71 nations marched across the stadium in front of a large crowd.

“We are tremendously proud of Beyonce’s performance as well as the performances of the rest of the team,” said a release from the BVI Olympic Committee.

On Monday, the team was welcomed home at the Road Town Ferry Dock by the press and other supporters.
