Standing at just six inches, the third place precision drill display trophy might not look like a big award, but for the members of the Virgin Islands Cadet Corps, it’s a prize to be proud of, said the group’s commandant, Selwyn Rock.

The police sergeant and former cadet helped found the VICC about two years ago, and recently took some members of the group to their first International Cadet Challenge Camp.

At the two-week camp, the students competed in a dozen events, but drill holds a special place in the hearts of cadets and their leaders, according to Mr. Rock.

“The highlight of the entire competition is the drill competition,” he said. Military drills are designed to test and train participants’ discipline, and to show off their ability to perform commands as a group in a precise, uniform manner.
