Virgin Islands sailor Thad Lettsome recently finished 16th at the  Laser Radial North American Championships in Vancouver, Canada.

All told, 53 sailors competed in 12 races, with most days boasting strong winds and currents.

Despite being one of the youngest sailors at the regatta, Mr. Lettsome posted strong results,  including four top nine finishes with a best of fourth place in the fifth race.

Elsewhere, Nathan Haycraft competed at the Opti Nams in Toronto, Canada. 

A total of 178 youth sailors competed at the regatta, which featured challenging conditions with light winds, rain and fog.

Only seven races were sailed and just two in the final series, but Mr. Haycraft finished the regatta with a bullet in the last race.

 However, the weather took a turn for the worse and the rest of the races were called off. Mr. Haycraft finished 11th in the Blue Fleet and 71st overall.

Back at home, 21 youth sailors took part in the sailing leg of the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay. A “parade-of-sail” from Manuel Reef to Nanny Cay took place on Monday.

The baton was passed to sailing students from Ebeneezer Thomas Primary School.  Opti Race Team member Victoria Rowlette then carried it along the dock at Manual Reef to hand it to Governor John Duncan aboard a Tortola sloop. 

The sloop set sail accompanied by a flotilla of lasers and optis to  the beach at Nanny Cay where it was passed on to members of theBVI Swimming Federation.

On Saturday, the West End Firecracker Regatta took place with Eddie Brockbank finishing first aboard his Corsair 24 trimaran.

Firewater took second, followed Girasoli and Wildfire was fourth.
