Pooches of all shapes and sizes bounded their way around a grassy course for their chance to win a title in Tortola’s annual dog show this weekend.

The Humane Society of the BVI hosted its 41st show in Johnsons Ghut on Saturday afternoon.

There was not only plenty to keep the pups occupied, but fun for all the family with water slides, stalls, games and lots of food and drink.

Judging began at 2 p.m. with ribbon rounds including most disobedient, best tricks, best dressed and basic obedience.

Prizes were also given for best adult handler and best junior handler.

The dogs were separated into five categories, and prizes went to the top long and short-haired island dog, mixed breed, large pedigree, small pedigree and puppy.

The winners of each category then competed for Best in Show, which was won by bullmastiff puppy Princess and her owner Julia Gulevych.

Ms. Gulevych, a four-year resident of Tortola and the owner of Le Boutique shop, was delighted with her win.

She said that her pup is not a stranger to success as he comes from a line of pedigree champions bred in Canada.

Following the show Humane Society manager Vijay Bissoondutt said he was happy with the turnout.

He added that the show is an event that both the society and dog owners “look forward to every year.”

Proceeds from the dog show go to provide food, medical supplies and bedding for the Johnsons Ghut shelter, which currently houses about 70 cats and dogs.
