The only thing Virgin Islands Search and Rescue’s crew knew about their training scenario was that there were two people injured on the beach at Cooper Island.

This time, however, the five-person crew participating in the weekly training exercise was joined by emergency room physician Dr. Christine Harry and her husband Sheldon Harry, a nurse.

“The idea is for you two to see how we operate out in the field,” said Cris Ruffell-Smith from the boat’s helm. The 20-year volunteer said he hoped the exercise would help Dr. Harry and others better treat patients rescued by VISAR.

“And we would welcome whatever feedback you have for us about our procedures,” Mr. Ruffell-Smith told the pair before they set out from Road Reef VISAR base.
