Wearing boots and gloves, they walked in and out of the mangroves at Wickhams Cay II on Saturday.

Business owners and other residents picked up trash in the area in observance of the annual International Coastal Cleanup.

Like other groups around the territory, they kept a record of what they found for the United States-based Ocean Conservancy. The non-profit organisation will analyse trash found at cleanup sites around the world to learn how garbage is affecting marine and coastal ecosystems globally.

At Wickhams Cay II, the volunteers collected about 10 large bags of garbage before noon. The group’s finds ranged from Styrofoam containers to shoes to boat garbage, according to Annie MacPhail, who organised the Wickhams Cay II effort.
