Cleanup operations following an oil spill in Road Town last Thursday have come to a halt due to bad weather, according to Government Information Services.

Scattered showers, unstable atmospheric conditions, and isolated thunderstorms have resulted in “difficulty with the cleanup operations and access to the dump site,” a GIS press release states.

It’s not clear when operations will resume, but senior government officials were scheduled to meet Tuesday afternoon to discuss the matter.

Crews worked on the site throughout the weekend and late into Monday night.

Costs have yet to be determined, but additional heavy-duty equipment had to be sourced to mount an effective response, according to GIS,

“Crew were able to make significant headway, removing the oil, water and highly contaminated sludge,” the press release stated.
