It’s official: Elections will be held on June 8, Premier Dr. Orlando Smith announced at a National Democratic Party “Prep Rally” on Wednesday night in the Market Square in Road Town.

The same day came the Virgin Islands Party Congress, where a full list of candidates was selected, though VIP officials have yet to publicly announce all those candidates.

Meanwhile, candidates are beginning to officially launch their campaigns.

People’s Empowerment Party District Nine candidate Faye Reese-Charles is holding her launch on Saturday at The Market in The Valley, Virgin Gorda, at 7:30 p.m., where PEP Chairman Alvin Christopher will also speak.

NDP District One candidate Shaina Smith is holding her launch at the Cappoons Bay Recreation Grounds on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Finally, an online “Meet the People” forum will be held today at 7 p.m., where candidates have the opportunity to field questions on the BVI National Forum Facebook page.

Only District Nine independent candidate Preston Stoutt has confirmed that he will participate in the forum, though Dr. Smith stated that he will encourage his colleagues to also participate.
