Jenna Paponette appeared at the Magistrates’ Court on Friday to face accusations that she stole $8,600 from her former roommate.

The virtual complainant kept the money in a chest of drawers at her home in Old Plantation, and noticed it was missing when she returned from work on April 20, according to Crown Counsel Herbert Potter.

Everything else in the home appeared to be intact, the prosecutor told the court.

Mr. Potter claimed the complainant reported the matter to police, and told the officers that Ms. Paponette may still have a key to her home.

The prosecutor said that police questioned the defendant, who then allegedly handed over $8,100 to the officers and admitted she had taken the money because she was experiencing financial difficulties.

Police then charged Ms. Paponette with burglary, Mr. Potter said.

Defence attorney Valerie Stephens-Gordon requested bail for her client, and told the court that the defendant has an 8-month-old child and resides in Belle Vue.

The Crown did not object to bail, but asked that Ms. Paponette be required to report in with police regularly.

Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards granted $60,000 bail signed with one surety and instructed the defendant to report in with police on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Ms. Paponette was ordered to return to court on Nov. 25 to make her plea.
