Six young people each will receive a grant from government to participate in educational programmes and training camps this summer.

Last week, government announced the recipients of the Virgin Islands Emerging Fellow Award: Trevia Gumbs, Tynelle Gumbs, Makayla Maduro, Kalinda Collins, Devika Ramcharitar and Maisha Henry.

Though officials did not disclose the amount that each student will receive, they previously indicated that a total of $50,000 would be distributed.

“We have a number of talented young persons in the community, and this is an opportunity for us to help those who show exceptional promise to fulfil their true potential,” said Education and Culture Minister Myron Walwyn.

Ages 10 to 18 were asked to submit applications in one of three areas: academics, athletics and the arts.

“We had a good response from the community, and the application process was quite close for the persons who applied, especially in the area of the arts,” Committee Chairman Arthur Selwood said.
