Premier Dr. Orlando Smith will be honoured by the Caribbean College of Surgeons this week at the group’s 11th Annual Clinical Conference at Long Bay Beach Resort.

Founded in 2002, the professional association of specialty surgeons was formed to govern all aspects of surgery in the Caribbean, according to a press release from the organisation.

The four-day clinical symposium, which starts Thursday, facilitates educational training workshops for members.

The association’s membership of 200 fellows and associate fellows includes surgeons from all Caribbean countries, in addition to Belgium, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

During the conference, members will present papers from the region, which they will compare to different studies conducted further abroad. Moderators include Dr. Smith and Dr. Marjorie Yee Sing, who is coordinating the event.

Health and Social Development Minster Ronnie Skelton will open the conference at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Dr. Smith will be honoured at an awards banquet at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the resort’s Pelican Conference Room.

Also during the conference, Dr. Joel Stevens, a vascular surgeon from Washington University Hospital, will present a study comparing VI dialysis patients to their counterparts in US facilities.
