Government rolled out the red carpet for residents celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s official birthday Saturday, distributing Virgin Islands flags and ushering attendees along a long strip of it so they didn’t have to walk on the grass on their way to seats under a marquee.

Governor Boyd McCleary inspected the nearly 20 groups of uniformed officers, scouts, brigades, school groups and service clubs before accepting their royal salute.

He also gave out long-service medals issued annually at the Queen’s official birthday. Twelve VI police, prison and fire officers were honoured this year.
