He told a police officer to call him Ishmael, but Crown Counsel Sarah Benjamin said in Magistrates’ Court Monday that his real name is Hugo Victor Harrigan, and he’s wanted in the United States.

Mr. Harrigan was stopped by Police Sergeant Glenn Callwood at about 10 a.m. last Thursday, after he allegedly ran a red light on the James Walter Francis Drive, heading east through the intersection with Station Avenue.

Mr. Callwood then noticed that the licence sticker on the car expired in March, and Mr. Harrigan told him he didn’t have his driver’s licence with him, Ms. Benjamin said. He initially refused to identify himself, then told the officer that his name was Ishmael Harrigan, the prosecutor said.

Mr. Callwood arrested Mr. Harrigan, who used indecent language on the way to the Road Town Police Station, Ms. Benjamin said. The sergeant obtained a warrant to search Mr. Harrigan’s home, where he found photo identification and other documents indicating that he was Hugo Victor Harrigan of the United States Virgin Islands, she said.

According to US court records, a man known as Hugo Victor Harrigan is currently listed as a “fugitive,” wanted on cocaine and money laundering charges first filed in 1997.

Mr. Harrigan was released on $7,000 bail with one surety and ordered to return to Magistrates’ Court June 29.
