Birds are a very good indicator of the health of an ecosystem, said Nancy Woodfield Pascoe, the planning coordinator at the National Parks Trust.

And that’s why the NPT is asking the public to help count them during the Christmas Bird Watch on Dec. 29 on Tortola and Jost Van Dyke and on Jan. 2 on Anegada.

Ms. Woodfield Pascoe called on volunteers to participate in the event, which she tagged a citizens’ contribution to science.

“What happens is: during the watch, we give the volunteers a checklist,” she said. “They state the time and the birds they saw.”

The most important items during the watch are binoculars and a bird guide, Ms. Woodfield Pascoe explained. “These are very essential,” she said. “From a novice to an experienced birdwatcher, you need binoculars and a bird guide.”

All residents are invited to participate in the Christmas Bird Count. To register or to get more information, contact Nancy Woodfield Pascoe at 852-3650 or 494-3904.
