More than 150 representatives of regional organisations that work to combat money laundering and terrorist financing are meeting in the Virgin Islands this week.

The 36th Plenary Meeting of the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force began Monday with representatives from 29 member jurisdictions attending working groups, according to Government Information Services.

The VI currently serves as the vice-chair of the CFATF, a position that is being represented by Cherno Jallow, QC, the director of policy, research and statistics of the Financial Services Commission.

Mr. Jallow said that hosting the gathering, which will include a public session on Wednesday, is a boost to the VI’s reputation.

“No jurisdiction wants to be viewed as having weak systems to effectively combat money laundering and terrorist financing,” he said, according to GIS. “When the systems are strong, particularly for a financial services jurisdiction like the BVI, it helps to enhance the reputation of the jurisdiction.”
