Four engineers visited the territory recently to help the Department of Disaster Management install a system of sensors that will monitor earth movements.

The engineers performed maintenance on the “strong motion seismic stations” located across the territory and linked the stations to a central unit at DDM’s McNamara headquarters, according to a press release from the department.  The stations are part of the Puerto Rico Strong Motion Programme, which is based at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez.

PRSMP collects data from across the Eastern Caribbean and allows participating disaster agencies to view earthquake activity in real time.

Dr. Carlos Huerta, one of the engineers that serviced the sensors, said that the data gathered will help in disaster response.
