“Somebody choose a year before I open the drawer,” said Christopher Varlack, acting chief records management officer.

He was speaking to a group of workers from the Department of Inland Revenue as he gave a tour of the National Archives on Tuesday as part of activities for Records May Day.

“1968,” Bryan Andrews said.

“Is that the year you were born?” the archivist responded. “Let me see if we have 1968.”

He opened a drawer and removed a diskette-like roll of microfilm, which he inserted into a reader. A few seconds later, a scanned page of the Tortola Times newspaper appeared on a screen.

The Society of American Archivists first observed Records May Day in 2006 to bring awareness to the need for disaster management for records, according to Mr. Varlack.

Here, the day was first observed in 2006 or 2007, shortly after the unit was founded in 2004, he said.
