Pedro Julio Samuel pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court Monday to entering a Cane Garden Bay apartment and stealing $500 from an envelope in the bedroom on Feb. 19.

When he was arrested four days later, he told police, “Officer, I did it, and it was wrong,” according to Senior Crown Counsel Sarah Benjamin.

On the day of the burglary, the complainant, Jacob Barron, left his apartment for work around 1 p.m., according to the allegations. When he returned around 5 p.m. he noticed that someone had been in the apartment, and he eventually discovered that $500 was missing from an envelope in his bedroom that had contained $950, prosecutors said.

“The complainant later saw the defendant at Myett’s restaurant, confronted him, and told him of his suspicions that he had taken the cash,” Ms. Benjamin told the court. Mr. Samuel admitted to taking the money, returned $350, “and said he would pay the rest back at a later date,” she said.

Given a chance to make a statement before sentencing — which is scheduled for May 10 — Mr. Samuel said he was friends with the complainant and was accustomed to visiting the apartment.

Bail was set at $45,000 with one surety, and Mr. Samuel was ordered to appear at the Cane Garden Bay Police Station each Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
