After accepting Speaker of the House Julian Willock’s resignation on May 3, members of the House of Assembly selected attorney Corine George-Massicote as his replacement Thursday morning.

Ms. George-Massicote said after being sworn in that she was humbled and honoured by the appointment.

“I acknowledge that the people of this territory expect proper decorum and good governance and deserve nothing less from this honourable House when conducting the people’s business,” she said. “In this regard, I commit myself to observe the tenets of fairness and respect in my role as speaker and to apply the ideals of transparency and accountability in my management of the affairs of this honourable House.”

Premier Dr. Natalio “Sowande” Wheatley made the nomination, which Communication and Works Minister Kye Rymer seconded.

Opposition Leader Julian Fraser offered his congratulations and urged Ms. George-Massicote to study the HOA Standing Orders and carry out the duties of the speaker.
