Virgin Islands culture will be the focus at the annual August Emancipation Festival this year, organisers said during a press conference held last Thursday.

They also announced the line-up of activities and the Festival Village’s namesake, Claudette “Boopie” Smith, who has served as a member of the VI Festivals and Fairs Committee for 35 years.

Headlining performers this year are to include Kassav, a zouk band with members from Guadeloupe and Martinique. Jamaican reggae and dancehall singer Barrington Levy is also on the line-up, as is Trinidad soca singer Shurwayne Winchester.

This year, organisers are reintroducing a peas-and-rice competition and a pea soup competition, said Rhodni Skelton, public relations officer for the committee.

Mr. Skelton also promised that the winners of the calypso show and the Miss BVI Pageant would receive a car.
