It’s a pet owner’s worst nightmare and it’s happening on Tortola. Again.

Residents say someone has been leaving ground beef mixed with strychnine poison at the side of some roads and near the homes of dog owners, and that several dogs, cats and other animals have been killed already.

“It’s a really horrible way to lose your pet,” said Tessa Gunter, director of the BVI Humane Society. Ms. Gunter is often called to help treat dogs that owners suspect have been poisoned. Last week was the most recent incident, but by the time the Cane Garden Bay owner got to the animal shelter, it was too late, Ms. Gunter said.

Another dog, this one in Josiahs Bay, was found dead in the owner’s yard last week, according to neighbour Cat Clayton. After calling the police to report the poison, Ms. Clayton discovered and picked up four or five pounds of ground beef along the roadside, she said.
