It’s now the seventh year of the Virgin Islands’ celebrations of Environment Month, and the events seem to be having a positive effect on the community, said Samuel Davies at the Save the Planet Fair yesterday in Sir Olva Georges Plaza.

“The more we get the word out about enhancing the environment and keeping it clean, the more people seem to embrace it,” Mr. Davies said. The long-time fisheries officer also served as the grand marshal for the Parade for the Planet later in the day.

One goal for this year is to educate the public about how food waste doesn’t just happen in the kitchen, said Kelvin Penn, chief conservation and fisheries officer.

Mr. Penn said the department has been talking to fishers about how their pots need to include a biodegradable panel. Without it, when the fish pots are lost, any sea life trapped inside dies without being harvested.
