On a busy day in the middle of tourism season, Cane Garden Bay is often lined with hundreds of beach chairs.

Apparently, the occasional chair gets swept out to sea.

“There’s a whole mess of them down there,” CGB resident Joe Wood said in full dive gear near the centre of the bay’s mooring field Saturday.

Mr. Wood had just been down to the bottom, where he came across a large pile of chairs and other debris during the second annual CGB Underwater Cleanup. The items were later dragged to shore.

“I think we had a great turnout this year,” said Myett’s Garden and Grille owner Val Rhymer. “We got more garbage last year, so I think that’s a good sign. This year volunteers said at some point they just couldn’t find any more.”

Aside from cleaning up trash, some attendees played beach volleyball and listened to a performance by the Last Resort band “Hot Sauce,” Ms. Rhymer said.

“This is definitely something we want to continue in the future,” she added, thanking volunteers and sponsors for making the day a success.
