Women turned up in elegant dresses and many men wore coats and ties.

It was the BVI Humane Society’s gaming night at Peg Leg’s on Saturday.

Hendrick Veerger was playing blackjack at one of more than a dozen tables. After losing a few chips, the gamer was getting restless, but the dealer at his table reassured him: “It is all for the puppies,” Mitch Kent said.

Like many of the dealers seated at more than a dozen other tables, Mr. Kent wore a white shirt and a black bow tie. “All right, ladies and gentlemen, let’s make this one count,” he said as he prepared to deal.

Later in the night, successful participants traded chips for gift items including paintings, bottles of wine, hotel stays and many others.

The annual event is one of the Humane Society’s biggest fundraisers.
