Twenty-four-year-old Jevon Frett once worked as a construction worker and lived a comfortable life. Now he is unemployed and struggling to take care of his two children.

On Tuesday, he was in a group of about 45 unemployed young people in a workshop geared towards equipping them with the skills needed to get a job.

During the workshop, which was held at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, they were taught interview and communication skills.

“I really don’t want any office work,” Mr. Frett said. “I want to be out in the field handling heavy equipment.”

Life without a job has been difficult, he said, adding, “I hope to get a job ASAP.”

The participant was among almost 500 young people who signed up on the Youth Unemployment Register, which was launched by the Ministry of Education and Culture at the beginning of December.
