In spite of rainy weather and a modest turnout, the spirit of the holiday season was evident as the Lions Club lit the Christmas tree in the Sir Olva Georges Plaza on Saturday evening.

Singers, musicians and others performed during the 35th annual celebration, and several government officials and Lions spoke.

“Tonight, when this beautiful tree is lit, it will once again signal the beginning of the festive season here in the BVI,” said Marvin Grant, a former Lions Club president. “I therefore ask that we at all times, and especially during this period, reflect on the true meaning and season of this celebration.”

He also encouraged participants to be community-minded during the season.

“Remember the sick and shut in, the needy, that little boy or girl who may not receive a toy or even a proper meal,” he said. “Seek them out and freely share with them. Show them that you care. Prove to them that we all care.”

There were fewer people than usual at the ceremony this year, according to Lions Club President Vanessa Simon, who speculated that the rainy weather affected the turnout.

However, the event was broadcasted live on ZBVI Radio, and many residents may have listened from home, she added.

“It was a very enjoyable event,” Ms. Simon said. “It was successful.”
