Nearly four years after the shooting of Kareem Sebastian, who died in May 2009 as a result of the gunshot wounds, police have made an arrest.

Jessroy McKelly, a 25-year-old American citizen, was formally charged for the murder Saturday, police said.

Mr. McKelly, who maintains a local address in Purcell Estate, is currently on remand at Her Majesty’s Prison in Balsam Ghut for a separate matter. He appeared in Magistrates’ Court Monday, but did not plead to the charges because he didn’t have a lawyer present.

“I’m hoping they can appoint me one through legal aid,” Mr. McKelly told Senior Magistrate Valerie Stephens.

Mr. Sebastian was shot multiple times outside of a shed near the entrance to Crab Lot — “also known as the Ghetto” — around 7:55 p.m. on Aug. 24, 2008, according to Senior Crown Counsel Valston Graham.

Prosecutors said police have interviewed several witnesses who saw the shooting, and one man who said McKelly told him of his plans to kill Mr. Sebastian. Mr. McKelly is scheduled to appear in court on July 13.
