David Springette appeared in Magistrates’ Court Monday, charged with breaking in to Stephen Sergeant’s Fat Hogs Bay apartment July 4 and stealing jewellery and electronics.

Mr. Springette allegedly removed louvres from Mr. Sergeant’s window while the man was away and stole a pair of gold earrings, a gold chain, a gold watch, a camera and a car stereo from the apartment, Crown Counsel Jude Hanley said in court. The items are collectively valued at $1,315, Ms. Hanley said.

When questioned by police, Mr. Springette said he knew nothing of the burglary, but fingerprint samples he allowed to be taken matched fingerprints found on the louvres, the prosecutor told Senior Magistrate Valerie Stephens.

Mr. Springette is charged with other similar offences, and the Crown is likely to join the cases together, she said. He is to return to court Oct. 2.
