John Bally was convicted Monday of rape and indecent assault by a unanimous High Court jury. The victim was a young neighbour who considered him a family friend, prosecutors said.

Mr. Bally allegedly raped the girl at some point between 2005 and 2007 when she came to watch television in his apartment, Crown Counsel Jude Hanley said in her opening statement. Then, in 2009 or 2010, he touched her in the genital area through her clothes, Ms. Hanley said. The girl is now 12 years old, according to a relative’s trial testimony.

The incident was reported after social workers came to the girl’s primary school to discuss child sexual abuse, Ms. Hanley said.

Ms. Hariprashad-Charles remanded Mr. Bally to Her Majesty’s Prison pending a sentencing hearing on Dec. 5.
