About half the room emptied as potential jurors were dismissed by Justice Albert Redhead shortly after the opening of the May assizes this morning.

Of the nearly 30 matters discussed, there were cases involving charges of attempted murder, aggravated burglary, rape, wounding and others.

The first trial – The Queen versus Charles Marks – is scheduled for Thursday morning. Mr. Marks has been arraigned and pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 16.

Other cases scheduled for this assizes include that of Roland Allen, who faces a charge of death by reckless driving. The trial will involve 12 witnesses, 10 of whom live overseas, said Principal Crown Counsel Tiffany Scatliffe. The matter was set for arraignment Monday and a trial will likely be set for mid-July.
