A group of seven international observers offered praise Tuesday for the Virgin Islands’ electoral system and promised to deliver a full report within a few weeks’ time.

“The British Virgin Islands enjoys an enviable reputation for having a well-run electoral process and, just as enviable, for having a citizenry that believes in the fairness of that process,” said Dr. Rudolph Collins, a former chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission.

Two teams of observers were organised by CARICOM and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in response to an invitation from Governor Boyd McCleary, Dr. Collins said. After meeting with officials and party leaders, the teams visited each polling station during the election, observing that measures were taken to ensure the security of the ballot boxes and that individual voters’ choices remained secret, he explained.
