Starting this week, patients who check in to Peebles Hospital or any other BVI Health Services Authority facility will receive a card that will help health care workers access their records, officials said this week.

The initiative was announced during the launch of the BVIHSA’s new Health Information System on Monday at Peebles Hospital.

The HIS card will include the patient’s name and a barcode, which will be scanned during each visit to a health facility, according to Mario Mohammed of RioMed LTD, the United Kingdom-based company that was awarded a $1.7 million contract to install the software and provide technical support and staff training.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Irad Potter praised the new system.

“This technology brings a lot of promise, but we must prepare ourselves to take full advantage of the opportunities it will present,” Dr. Potter said.
