Police recorded a “record high” of burglaries — 20 residential break-ins and seven at businesses — within the two weeks leading up to Tuesday, according to a press release from the Police Information Office.

The home burglaries “almost all took place during the daytime” in the Sage Mountain/Windy Hill, Hannahs Estate, Baughers Bay and North Sound areas, according to the release.

In some cases, locks and deadbolts were picked or damaged during forced entries, but in many cases, burglars entered through unlocked doors or doors and windows with defective locks, according to the release. The main items stolen were laptop computers, cash and jewellery.

Police are “following leads into these burglaries” and advise homeowners to install security cameras and alarm systems and to secure their windows, the release said.

Homeowners can request security inspections from the Police Crime Prevention Unit by calling 494-3822, extension 5384.
