The high cost of rent, electricity and schoolbooks were on the minds of Premier Dr. Orlando Smith’s “friends” on Sunday afternoon. The premier held a question-and-answer session on his Facebook page, and promised to report back with answers to some of the questions posed during the chat.

With regard to electricity costs, Dr. Smith said high fuel costs, not power spikes, are to blame.

“I’ve been assured that when power is restored it does not cause a surge which speeds up meters, but fuel costs are very high right now and that is definitely impacting people’s electricity bills. I encourage everyone to continue their electricity conservation measures in the meantime,” he wrote.

Cheryl Sebastian later responded that electricity bills are indeed “very high,” and said that more should be done to “take the country to using renewable energy.”

Dr. Smith responded that Natural Resources and Labour Minister Dr. Kedrick Pickering “is looking into the options.” Anegada, he said, is being considered for a solar energy pilot project.
