Queen Elizabeth II didn’t spend her 89th birthday in the Virgin Islands, but that didn’t stop the territory from celebrating Saturday with a parade at the Festival Village Grounds.

Under the command of Superintendent St. Clair Amory, parade marchers performed a march-past and salute for Governor John Duncan.

Marchers included police, prison and fire officers; service clubs like the Girl Guides; the VI Cadet Corps; and other young students.

According to Soranny Ortiz, a 13-year-old marcher from Joyce Samuel Primary School, the parade was a success.

“It went amazing,” she said.

Mr. Duncan then addressed the crowd, reading aloud a birthday letter he had sent to the Queen.

In the letter, the governor wrote that he was “delighted to convey” good wishes on behalf of the people of the VI.

Following his speech, Mr. Duncan presented awards to police, fire and prison officers who achieved career milestones this year.
