Holiday schedule

The Beacon office will be closed Monday in observance of the Commonwealth Day holiday. Advertising and editorial deadlines will remain the same for next week’s issue, which will be published on Thursday as usual. Beaconites hope residents enjoy themselves during the holiday.

Wedding waves

While visiting a Tortola beach recently, one reporter witnessed the post-wedding photography session of one evidently very happy couple. She and her friend said “hello” and “congratulations” to the bride and groom, who, in their formal attire, stood out from other beachgoers. The couple then trudged to a more deserted spot on the beach followed by a photographer to pose for the classic post-wedding kiss photo. With the sun setting, it seemed to make a very lovely photo from where the reporter sat. She hopes the couple’s marriage is as lovely as the pictures no doubt will be.

Old Road Town

A Beaconite learned a lot about old Road Town during her recent reporting about a walk along historic Main Street, but perhaps the most surprising fact was that the stretch of Main Street between Peebles Hospital and the old prison used to make up all of Road Town. That’s right, in the territory’s early history as a plantation island, the reporter would have covered most of town in her usual walk from the office for a cup of coffee.

Texting and riding

On Friday evening, a Beaconite riding through the Road Town Roundabout was shocked to see young man on a motorbike texting while driving. He appeared so engrossed in the message that he wasn’t paying attention to approaching traffic, and a jeep almost knocked him down. This reporter was shocked to see such carelessness. She is thankful that he avoided an accident, and hopes he learned a lesson for the future.

Tour buses

On several occasions while walking to work, a Beaconite has noticed that some tour operators park their vehicles in the road while they show tourists landmarks or other attractions. She knows it is important for tourists see what the territory has to offer, but she also believes that tour operators should be a lot more considerate of other drivers: They should pull off the road before stopping.

New sign

A Beaconite was pleased to learn last week that sewerage work is under way in Road Town, with the laying of pipes near Wickhams Cay I. In addition to the actual work, the Beaconite also saw another indication that the project is moving forward. A large outdoor sign announcing the project was recently erected. The sign in itself doesn’t necessarily indicate progress, though. Near the Waterfront Drive sign are two similar signs for the “New Road Town Market” and the “Road Town Community Centre.” Both signs have been up for several years, though no progress has been visible at either site. The Beaconite hopes the sewerage project will advance in a speedier manner.
