Residents gathered at Wickhams Cay on Feb. 1 to toss wreaths into the sea in memory of Africans who died at sea during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The ceremony, which was organised by the Afrikan Studies Club, was part of activities for Black History Month, an event that began in America.

The ceremony this year “went well,” according to club member Jerome Joseph.

The Callaloo Poets also held their monthly open mic event under the theme “Black Love” in celebration of the month, Mr. Joseph said. Additionally, the Rastafarian community along with Menen I Designs organised a fashion show and crafts expo on Feb. 15 at the Festival Village Grounds.

“We just need more activities from different groups to mark the month,” he said.

The club began celebrating the month with the wreath ceremony four years ago, according to Mr. Joseph, who added that the observance doesn’t end on Feb. 28 for him.

“I celebrate it every single day,” he said. “If I don’t know my past, how can I go forward?”
