Based on the number of patients who have come in during the first month, specialist clinics appear to be a good choice for Virgin Islands patients, hospital staff said last week.

“It’s been more than we expected, actually,” said Dr. Jose Velez-Palmer, Caribbean liaison for HIMAHealth.

The partnership agreement between the BVI Health Services Authority and the Puerto Rico-based HIMAHealth to offer specialty clinics was signed in February to bring cardiology, hematology, oncology, neurology and pulmonary care to the territory.

The specialist clinics are held each Friday at Peebles Hospital, with different doctors available on different weeks. Eventually, officials plan to create a regular schedule where each specialist is in the territory once a month, Dr. Velez-Palmer said.
