Franklin Montgomery Jr. had just finished his dominos game and was about to call it a night. He’d had eight or 10 beers and was walking the block-and-a-half distance back to his friend’s house when they jumped him.

There was no traffic on the Baughers Bay Public Road that night, Dec. 5, 2009. No one else was around when the three or four assailants came at him, beat him up and took his gold chains, Mr. Montgomery testified before a High Court jury.

The trial of Deshawn Matthew, a 24-year-old Baughers Bay man who prosecutors believe participated in the robbery, started Monday before Justice Rita Joseph-Olivetti.

Restak Evans, 19, was scheduled to be tried alongside Mr. Matthew, but he pleaded guilty to theft charges before the trial began. In return, Crown Counsel Valston Graham said, the Crown will not proceed with robbery charges against Mr. Evans.
